Walking into your own bedroom to find a slightly deformed version of yourself sitting on your bed isn’t exactly what one might call normal. Then again, when you’re destined to lead the Magnificent Twelve in the fight against the Pale Queen, not much is. So it’s no surprise that Mack finds a golem in his room one day a creature made entirely of mud, that can make himself look just like Mack. Okay, maybe not just like him. There is the whole matter of him not having nostrils . . . and his left eye wandering . . . and having a single long tooth instead of a row of teeth . . . but mostly, he looks like Mack. The golem is there to take Mack’s place while he goes off to find the rest of the Magnificent Twelve. Luckily, Mack’s parents are too distracted to notice much—even the replacement of their son with a nostril-less magic creature who likes to sleep on the ceiling.
